COLUMBUS, Ohio – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) named its Scholar All-Americans on Monday with Ohio State’s Erik Evans and Ben Randall two of the 48 players named to the 2018 class.
Randall and Evans are Ohio State’s 13th and 14th Scholar All-Americans. It’s also the seventh straight year that at least one Buckeye has earned this prestigious honor.
“The work that Erik and Ben put in both on the field and in the classroom was extraordinary,” said head coach Nick Myers. “They exemplified what it means to be Buckeyes and we’re thrilled to see them honored for their hard work.”
Randall, who this season became Ohio State’s first-ever two-time first team All-American, graduated in May with a degree in finance from the Fisher College of Business. In his two seasons with the Scarlet and Gray, he started all 36 games with 71 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers.
Like Randall, Evans graduated in May as well. He earned his degree in sport industry from the College of Education and Human Ecology. Evans was also a mainstay in the starting lineup, starting 55 straight games over three seasons while tying this year for the team lead in caused turnovers (15). He earned honorable mention USILA All-America honors.
With Randall and Evans leading the way, Ohio State’s defense ranked first in the Big Ten in goals-against average (8.60), allowing seven goals or fewer in seven of 15 games. Both were also selected in the 2018 MLL Draft and have already made their professional debuts: Randall with the Charlotte Hounds and Evans with the Atlanta Blaze.
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee annually selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III.
A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale). In addition to the Scholar All-America distinction, Randall and Evans were also OSU Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
