Quotes vs. Purdue, 1/19/99%^$Attendance: (18,595)

%^$Purdue head coach Gene Keady

%^$”Well, they went out there and did it their way. They’ve got to realize that this is not Frank Sinatra, this is a team game. We need leadership from our players.”

%^$”Right now we are just not playing with a lot of heart. We’ve had to deal with a lot of attitudes during practice this week and with players and with players not really buying into our game.”

%^$”At the rate we’re going, we’re not even headed for the NIT. We’re headed for practice – in the spring.”

%^$”I have faith in my players. We just have to come up with some productivity or get beaten.”

%^$”Michael Redd’s words were quite apropos because you do have to win at home. Ohio State won the must-win game. Ohio State is taking what you’re giving them, taking the positive part of that, and executing it.”

%^$Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien

%^$”This was a terrific win tonight over the Number-14 team in the country. Our guys responded in the situation of a must-win game.”

%^$”First we played great defense. We tried to get in their face to make them force their shots.”

%^$”Michael was outstanding tonight. He scored 30 points on great shots. Michael reached 1,000 points tonight, the second quickest to do that. He is a very coachable player.”

%^$”Scoonie controlled the pace of the game. Ken Johnson helped our defensive scheme by being a man on the glass. He was a major factor inside.”

%^$”I am surprised at the margin of victory. We just wanted to play well enough to win. Our guys were embarrassed last year at home by Purdue. They wanted to come out strong.”

Game Notes vs. Purdue, 1/19/99%^$Attendance: (18,595)

%^$* Ohio State sophomore guard Michael Redd eclipsed the 1,000-point mark with his 30-point performance. His rise to 1,000 points is the second-fastest in Ohio State history. Buckeye legend Jerry Lucas (1960-62) reached 1,000 points during a 30-point effort against Northwestern Jan. 14, 1961 in his 38th game as a Buckeye. Redd has played in 49 games at Ohio State and has scored 1,024 career points. Redd joins Lucas, Dave Sorenson, Herb Williams, Brad Sellers and Jim Jackson as the only players to reach 1,000 points in two seasons.

%^$* The 29-point win marks the largest win ever over a Gene Keady-led squad at Purdue. The previous high was 18, in an 86-68 Buckeye win. It was also the Buckeyes largest win over Purdue since 1978, when OSU downed Purdue by 24, 91-77. The win was just one point off the largest win all-time over Purdue. That record was set in 1961 when Ohio State downed Purdue by 30 points, 92-62.

%^$* The Buckeye win breaks a nine-game losing streak to Purdue. OSU last defeated Purdue on March 14, 1993, a 72-62 win at West Lafayette. Ohio State’s last home win over Purdue was Feb. 8, 1992 (71-59).

%^$* The 29-point win is Ohio State’s largest in a Big Ten game since March 14, 1992, when the Buckeyes trounced Minnesota 94-63.

%^$* Ohio State’s stingy defense held Purdue to a season-low 43 points and 32 percent field goal shooting. Purdue’s previous lows were 47 points and 38.8 percent shooting, both set in a loss to North Carolina. The Boilermakers hit just one three-point field goal (one-for-15). Purdue’s 43 points are their least against Ohio State since the 1968-69 season, when the Buckeyes defeated Purdue 58-41.

%^$* The 43 points is the least points the Buckeye defense has allowed this season. The Buckeyes held Army to 45 points on Nov. 22.

%^$* Ken Johnson moved into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time blocked shot list after notching four more rejections. Johnson, with 109 career blocks, is now 22 behind fifth-place Lawrence Funderburke (131) and 27 behind fourth-place Granville Waiters (136).

%^$* Ohio State has connected on at least one three-point field goal attempt over the past 203 games. Jon Sanderson extended the streak with a trey at the 17:52 mark of the first half.

%^$* After failing to score in double figures against Michigan, Michael Redd bounced back in grand fashion to tally 30 against the Boilermakers. He has now scored in double figures in 47 of his 49 career games. The 30 points ties a season high, set against Wisconsin (1/2/99). His career high is 32, set against Penn State last year (2/28/98).

%^$* Ohio State held Purdue to two points over a span of 7:53 in the first half. The Buckeyes took advantage, extending a five point lead (18-13) into a 20-point bulge (35-15).

%^$* Ohio State has defeated three Associated Press-ranked teams this season. OSU last did that in the 1993-94 season when the Buckeyes defeated No. 18 Boston College, No. 16 Wisconsin and No. 17 Indiana. Ohio State had beaten three AP-ranked teams over the previous four seasons.

%^$* Ohio State last defeated Hoosier state rivals Indiana and Purdue at home in the same season during the 1990-91 season, when OSU downed IU 97-95 in double overtime and Purdue 66-59.

%^$* Neshaun Coleman added another three-pointer to his career total. He currently stands second on the all-time list for three-pointers attempted (382) and made (125).

%^$* Scoonie Penn notched a career-high three blocked shots in the game. In his three seasons of collegiate basketball, Penn had accumulated just five total blocked shots. Penn also was sure-handed with the ball, dishing out six assists while committing no turnovers.

%^$* Ohio State is now 13-1 when leading at the half and 9-3 when out-rebounding their opponents. The Buckeyes are 7-0 when shooting better than 50 percent.

%^$* OSU tied a season low with 10 turnovers. The Bucks previously had 10 turnovers against Vanderbilt (11/28/98).
