Postgame Quotes
Ohio State 81 , Jacksonville 68
Dec. 17, 2008
Value City Arena
Attendance: 12,250

Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the overall game
“We beat a very good team tonight. Their record is definitely not indicative of the team they are.  For whatever reason, we just were not in the game defensively tonight.  We just lacked tenacity and toughness and were very fortunate to come out on top.”

On the defensive performance
“We were just lacking intensity. We fouled too much and had trouble in transition.  It was like we had one guy playing hard and four others relaxing.  We’ve got to get it corrected for Saturday’s game.”

On David Lighty’s performance
“I was happy for David.  It was nice to finally see the ball go in for him.  He works hard everyday, and I think tonight he realized that he just has to play like he’s been there before.  I was very pleased with his job tonight.”

David Lighty, junior guard
On his scoring tonight
“The shots were falling for me tonight. It felt good. I was being more aggressive and attacking the hoop. Making free throws was also a big thing for me. I do know that if I’m not scoring, I can still help my team defensively or in other ways.”

On the team’s defense
“We let them shoot 50 percent tonight and that’s the first time this season we’ve allowed that. We need to go back to the drawing board and fix ourselves defensively so that doesn’t happen again.”

Evan Turner, sophomore guard
On the amount of stoppages in the second half
“Most of the time, the stoppages were in our favor. It seemed that, in the second half, it became easier for us to break the press. Our flow was still very good and we got a lot of action from everyone tonight.”

On the team’s defense
“They scored a lot and we weren’t ready for it. We saw them shoot and have openings, but we were not reacting quickly enough. The type of defense we played tonight is not the type of defense that we emphasize at The Ohio State University.”

Cliff Warren, Jacksonville head coach
On the game
“I was pleased with our effort and fight tonight. I thought it was uncharacteristic of our defense to let them shoot that well. I don’t think anyone has shot that well against us in years. They made the open shots.”

On the Buckeyes’ run to put the game out of reach
“They did a great job capitalizing on our mistakes. We didn’t do enough defensively to get the stops we needed to keep the game close. Diebler made the big three coming out of the timeout and really put the game out of reach.”

On the Jacksonville game plan
“We wanted to create havoc with our press and in the first half we did a good job of that. The pace slowed down in the second half and that didn’t favor Jacksonville. I was disappointed that we couldn’t get the stops in the half court towards the end to put ourselves into a position to win.”
