Program Descriptions and Air Dates and Times:

O-H-I-O 106

This episode of O-H-I-O starts billions of years ago with the origins of life as traced by physicists at Ohio State working at the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Next, visit the unique laboratories directed by university nutritional and diet experts who set up shop inside COSI, one of the nation’s premier children’s science museums. Then, learn what dogs can teach us when it comes to bone cancer in children through the work of a team of cancer experts, including Dr. Cheryl London with the Oncology/Hematology Service at the Veterinary Medical Center. Finally, travel to Safford, Arizona, for a look at the Large Binocular Telescope where Ohio State astronomers and researchers are getting an unprecedented look at gamma bursts, galaxies, black holes, and supernovas.

Airs Wednesday, April 6 at 3am

O-H-I-O 107

Summertime is research time at Ohio State. Learn how students in the College of Public Health test quality and search for ways to keep Lake Erie beaches safe for swimmers, while researchers in the College of Optometry look to protect eyes from UV rays and cataracts. Also, learn how mechanical engineering students are going green to collaborate on the design and construction of an energy-efficient, sustainable “Pod” home and how it contributed to a solar decathlon house. And see the latest on Pelotonia, a grassroots bike tour dedicated to raising funds for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. This segment tunes into the new research fellowships launched by the $4.5 million ride in 2009.

Airs Tuesday, April 5 at noon

O-H-I-O 108

When welding engineers say “hot” they could be talking about the products and processes they design or their future career prospects. Step inside the partnership between Ohio State and the Edison Welding Institute as these specialized emerging professionals design the products and create the jobs of tomorrow.  Jobs are a part, but only part of the answer when it comes to overcoming the challenges of poverty, a fact understood and applied by a unique “test it in the real world” team of researchers at Ohio State’s new International Center for Poverty Solutions. Take a walk with them as they hear first-hand what we can do to help more people attain self-sufficiency. Finally, see how chemistry might just provide the secret element to making a battery-powered world reality, the dream of Ohio State University chemistry professor, former dean and now head of the National Science Foundation’s Chemistry Division, Matt Platz.

Airs Tuesday, April 5 at 12:30pm

O-H-I-O 109

Learn how Ohio s fifth-ranked primary and secondary education system is speeding toward becoming first in the nation – thanks to a boost in federal Race to The Top funds won with the help of Ohio State, Battelle and other key partners. Next, dive in with researchers and students at Stone Laboratory as they combat threats to Lake Erie, one of the Midwest’s most precious ecological and economic resources. Join Ohio State educators and students as they help rebuild the intellectual assets of earthquake-torn Haiti, even tapping soccer to restore youth and energize a community. And journey with Buckeyes to Michigan not to celebrate another victory, but to continue work on a century old living learning lab that’s central to our understanding of natural carbon capture.

Airs Tuesday, April 12 at noon

O-H-I-O 110

The Ohio State University Marching Band is known for excellence and steeped in tradition. From Skull Sessions to Script Ohio, we go behind-the-scenes to learn what it takes to be a part of “The Best Damn Band in The Land.” Also in this episode, find out how one of America’s largest universities carefully creates a “so big it’s personal” experience for new students, acclimating them to campus and preparing them for academic success. Next, woman and man’s best friend take center stage as cancer experts discover the parallels between bone cancer in children and cancer in dogs, improving treatment options for both. Then, see how new knowledge and creativity can be achieved when artists and scientists collaborate at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design using computer graphics and animation. Finally, in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness month, uncover how society’s “deepest secret” can be prevented and treated through initiatives like Ohio State’s It’s Abuse campaign.

Airs Tuesday, April 12 at 12:30pm

O-H-I-O 111

An integrated approach to energy and the environment can help gain overall efficiency. Hear from former astronaut and current VP for Energy and the Environment Ron Sega and others as they discuss Ohio State’s game-changing role in energy independence, on and off campus. Next, learn about aquaculture and how researchers at The Ohio State University South Centers are helping farmers adapt by raising fish instead of traditional livestock. Then, see how Campus Partners has re-energized High Street and is at work in other core university neighborhoods. And last, crack open the secrets of ice core research and learn how to preserve these vital historical records.

Airs Wednesday, April 13 at 3am

O-H-I-O 202

In this episode, discover the depth of Ohio State’s leadership to cure cancer, including break-through discoveries, Pelotonia and our recent designation as an “exceptional” cancer research center. Next, take a tour of duty with military history professor and former top advisor to General Petraeus. Finally, what does it mean to “Be a Buckeye?” Faculty, staff, and students share their life-changing experiences.

Airs Wednesday, April 20 at 3am

O-H-I-O 203 (new episode)

In this episode, the Ohio State EcoCAR team speeds ahead of competitors as they work to build a more environmentally-friendly, efficient car that meets the toughest standards and safety requirements. Next, two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin “pays it forward” for Ohio State, as a recent star on an episode of Big Ten Icons and as a leader for the university. Then, Ohio State researchers give us a peek at the universe and its origins as seen their Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. And last, hear discussions from experts about the future of transportation and how researchers at Ohio State are helping an entrepreneur create a replacement for gasoline.

Airs Tuesday, April 19 at noon

O-H-I-O 204 (April debut-description TDB)
