COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior shortstop Lilli Piper has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Piper hit .500 (5-for-10) over the weekend as the Buckeyes bested Texas and Wichita State (twice) to go 3-0 at the Texas Invitational. She connected on two home runs – including a walk-off homer in the first meeting with Wichita State on Friday – and drove in five runs. Piper tallied five hits, seven runs, a team-high 14 total bases and a 1.400 slugging percentage.
To open the tournament, Piper helped the Buckeyes erase a 3-0 deficit on their way to the fourth walk-off triumph of 2018. Staring down two outs in the bottom of the seventh, she smacked a two-run walk-off homer over the left field wall to lead the team to a 4-3 victory over the Shockers. It was her second walk-off hit of the season.
Piper launched her second home run in less than twenty-four hours in Ohio State’s 8-5 comeback win over Texas on Saturday. She was even more impressive in the rematch with Wichita State as she went 3-for-3 with three runs and a RBI. The Norton, Ohio native was just shy of hitting for the cycle with a single, double and triple in the 9-0 five-inning shutout.
For the season, Piper has a team-best .413 batting average with 19 hits, 17 runs scored, 17 RBI, six doubles and five home runs. She also tops the squad in total bases (42) and slugging percentage (.913). Piper has posted a hit and gotten on base in each of the last nine games. She has accumulated five games with multiple hits and multiple RBI. She currently leads the Big Ten in numerous categories, including slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, doubles and home runs. With Piper’s help, Ohio State has an 11-1 overall record and has won six straight games.
