All-America swimmer Tim Phillips won the 100 meter butterfly event in a time of 51.69 Thursday night at the 2011 ConocoPhillips National Championships being held at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif.

After posting the fastest time (52.03) in the preliminaries, Phillips outdistanced Tyler McGill of Auburn by 0.15 to capture the gold medal.

Phillips will also compete in the World University Games August 14-19 in Shenzhen, China, swimming both the 50 and 100 fly races.

Phillips placed fifth at this year’s NCAA championships in the 100 butterfly, swimming that event in a school-record time of 45.90. The junior-to-be from Vienna, W.Va., who swam for Team USA in the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, was 2011 Big Ten runner-up in both the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and qualified for the NCAA championships in three individual events and four relays.
