COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peter Kobelt, a senior on the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Co- Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Kobelt, a native of New Albany, Ohio, has collects his fourth weekly award of the season and fifth of his Buckeye career and shares the honor with Leonard Stakhovsky of Penn State.
Kobelt, who is ranked eighth in the country in singles, claimed four wins last weekend after the No.2 Buckeyes downed Michigan (6-1) and Michigan State (5-2) last weekend. The OSU senior knocked off No. 112 Alex Petrone of Michigan (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) and Drew Lied of Michigan State (6-3, 6-1) in the No. 1 singles position. He added doubles wins against No. 22 Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks of Michigan (8-6) and Lied and John Patrick Mullane of Michigan State (8-7 (7-3)) with partner Kevin Metka.
The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes are one win shy of breaking the NCAA all-time home win streak record (185-consecutive matches). The Scarlet and Gray host No. 28 Northwestern at 6 p.m. Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center. As always, admission is free.
