COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peter Kobelt, a senior on the No. 1 Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Kobelt, a native of New Albany, Ohio, earns his second career weekly award.
Kobelt posted wins over six ranked opponents, including three in the Top 10, to lead Ohio State to its first ITA National Team Indoor Championship title. He defeated No. 55 Stephane Piro of Florida (6-2, 6-2), No. 3 Mitchell Frank of Virginia (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) and No. 7 Ray Sarmiento of USC (6-3, 6-4) in the No. 1 singles position.
In doubles, paired with redshirt junior Kevin Metka, the second-ranked duo in the country went 4-0 over the weekend, including wins over No. 24 Piro and Michael Alford from Florida (6-4), No. 7 Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool from Texas (6-2), Alex Domijan and Justin Shane from Virginia (6-3) and Sarmiento and Yannick Hanfmann from USC (6-4).
Kobelt holds a 7-1 mark in dual play at No. 1 singles in 2014 and a 14-5 overall record. In doubles, Kobelt and Metka are 20-5, winning nine of their last ten matches.
Ohio State returns to the road this weekend, playing Notre Dame Saturday before opening up conference play at Indiana Feb. 24.
