COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following a split of its games last weekend against Rutgers and Kent State, the Rutgers field hockey team begins the stretch run of its 2014 regular season with a pair of contests this weekend against ranked opponents – Friday at No. 18 Indiana and Sunday at home versus No. 12 Iowa.

BUCKEYES IN A NUTSHELL

  • Coming off a 3-1 victory over in-state foe Kent State, the Buckeyes are 5-8 overall. Ohio State is still in search of its first Big Ten win.
  • Maddy Humphrey, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., continues to lead Ohio State on offense. He has 30 points on the season (11 goals, eight assists) and has been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week three times (the most of any rookie in the league).
  • Humphrey has at least one point in eight of the last nine games and multiple points in six of the last nine games. The Buckeyes are 5-2 this year when Humphrey had multiple points.
  • Not to be outdone, junior Peanut Johnson had a team-high 11 assists on the season and is second with 21 points. Over her career, she has 21 goals and 16 assists for 58 points.
  • On defense, freshman Liz Tamburro leads the way with a Big Ten-leading 90 saves and .698 save percentage. She has at least 10 saves in five games thus far.
  • In last Sunday’s victory over Kent State, the duo of Annabel Sams and Humphrey, both freshmen, scored all three of Ohio State’s goals. Overall, the freshmen class has accounted for 18 of the Buckeyes’ 35 goals (51%).

IN THE BIG TEN STATS

  • Maddy Humphrey is fourth in points (30), sixth in goals (11), seventh in assists (8), sixth in goals per game (0.85) and seventh in assists per game (0.62).
  • Peanut Johnson is third in assists (11) and assists per game (0.85) and 10th in points (21).
  • Emma Royce is 10th in total shots (45)
  • Liz Tamburro is first in saves (90) and saves per game (6.92)

WIN NO. 300
Head coach Anne Wilkinson, in her 19th season at the helm of the Ohio State program, is just one win away from becoming the 15th Division I head coach to amass 300 career victories. Wilkinson, who spent nine years at American (1987-1995) before arriving in Columbus, is 299-236-9 in her career and 220-152 at Ohio State.

HUMPHREY 3X B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Following a three-goal, one-assist performance last week in games against Rutgers and Kent State, Maddy Humphrey was named the Big Ten Freshmen of the Week. It is her third honor this season.

Nationally, she is 10th in points per game, 21st in goals per game and 24th in assists per game. Humphrey has at least one point in eight of the last nine games and multiple points in six of the last nine games. The Buckeyes are 5-2 this year when Humphrey had multiple points.

SCOUTING INDIANA
No. 18 Indiana (9-3) picked up their first Big Ten win of the season on Saturday against No. 20 Michigan State. Senior Audra Heilman recorded both goals for the Hoosiers, which marked her third multi-goal game of the season. Goalkeeper Maggie Olson recorded six saves in the contest, including a couple crucial ones as the Spartans had three penalty corners with no time left on the clock.

SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES
Iowa, ranked 12th in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, plays at Michigan State on Friday before coming to Columbus. Heading into this weekend’s road trip, the Hawkeyes are 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten, which wins coming over Indiana and Rutgers.

The duo of Natalie Cafone and Stephanie Norlander have a combined 66 points on the year. Cafone leads the way with 16 goals and five assists while Norlander has contributed 13 goals and three assists. In goal, Alexandra Pecora had started 11 games with a 1.68 goals-against average, 48 saves and one shutout.
