Columbus, Ohio – Four swimmers donning the Scarlet and Gray won races on the first day of the 2018 Ohio State Winter Invitational at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Austin Mortimer was the first champion of the day in the 500 freestyle; he clocked a time of 4:27.72 to earn his gold medal. Carson Burt came in to touch the wall right after Mortimer, clocking a time of 4:27.74 to garner silver.
The Buckeyes swept the 100 backstroke races with wins by Devin Landstra (54.46/personal best) for the women, and Colin McDermott (48.43/personal best) took the top spot for the men. Following McDermott in the men’s race were Evan Stapp (48.74) and Ryan Wagner (49.28), who captured the second and third-place positions, respectively.
Daniel Gloude led a dominant showing for the Buckeyes in the men’s 400 individual medley. He swam away with gold in a personal-best time of 3:49.25 to capture a three-plus second win. Reed McGraw (3:52.71), Brandon Fronczak (3:56.05), Will Matz (3:56.69) and Justin Hopkins (3:57.56) proceeded to follow Gloude to sweep the top five spots in the event.
