NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – Will Voetsch and Caden Orewiler each carded rounds of even-par 71 to pace the Ohio State men’s golf team in the opening round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club on Sunday.
As a team, the Buckeyes opened with an up-and-down round of 5-over 289. After a slow start which saw them slip to as much as 6-over, the Buckeyes got 10 birdies from their four counters on holes 16-18 to right the ship and get back on track through nine holes. The second nine featured a little more steady golf but a shaky final few holes left them with a 289.
Orewiler and Voetsch each made four birdies and four bogeys in their even-par rounds. Both players also birdied all three holes from 16, 17 and 18. The duo currently sits in a tie for 28th heading into Monday’s second round.
Daniel Wetterich, the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week, is a shot behind his teammates after a 1-over 72. He too made four birdies in the round and is tied for 36th. Fellow junior Caleb Ramirez made a couple of birdies around the turn and would finish with a round of 4-over 75.
Will Grimmer had his toughest round of the young season, going 4-over in the final five holes to post a 77.
The Buckeyes will be off on Tuesday morning at 9:20 a.m. PT which will 12:20 p.m. ET off the 10th tee. They are paired with Georgia and Oregon.
