ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio State University women’s golf team suffered a 3-2 loss in the championship bracket semifinals at the East & West Match Play Challenge, falling to the Oregon Ducks. The decisive fifth match extended to a 19th hole before Oregon escaped with the team win.
After finishing ‘1-2’ in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the event, Jessica Porvasnik and Jaclyn Lee kept it rolling into match play by both winning their individual bouts. Lee defeated Kathleen Scavo, 4&3, to even the team tally at 1-1. She never trailed after winning the first hole. Porvasnik finished next, winning 2&1 over Petra Salko to push Ohio State ahead 2-1. Porvasnik won hole number two and remained on top for the remainder of the round.
Rio Watanabe walked on to the 18th tee box ‘down one’ individually and the team tally even at 2-2; needing to take the hole to extend the match. She did just that by sinking a birdie to force a playoff. Oregon’s Amy Matsuoka dropped in a birdie of her own on the 19th, however, to send the Ducks into the championship bracket finals.
Zoe-Beth Brake picked up a win in the individual match play bracket. The redshirt senior got past Nebraska’s Audrey Judd, 4&3, to earn a shot at fifth place on Tuesday (Sept. 20).
