Olatoye registered a toss of 20.65m (67-9.00) on her sixth and final throw of the event, but it wasn’t enough to top Annette Echikunwoke’s (Cincinnati) best mark of 21.59m (70-10.00). Olatoye and Echikunwoke entered the Kentucky Invite with the top two weight throws in the NCAA and they will more than likely faceoff again against each other in March at the NCAA Championships.
Zedella earned a silver in the men’s weight throw with a heave of 20.58m (67-6.25), and he was joined in the top 10 by teammates Max Seipel (sixth place/18.50m/60-8.50) and Reggie Browley (ninth place/personal-best 16.89m/55-5.00).
The only track event of day one was the distance medley relay. The women’s quartet of Vanessa Robinson, Aziza Ayoub, Courtney Clody and Kalee Soehnlen worked together to clock at time of 11:59.44 to take third place. The men’s foursome of Alex Lomong, Tyrese Fajardo, Paul Bete and Luke Landis completed the relay in 9:59.21 for fourth place.
Saturday’s action will get started at 9 a.m. ET with the women’s and men’s high jump going on simultaneously at two different pits. Running events will begin at 12 p.m. with the prelims of the 60m hurdles.
