COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brian Olinger, a senior on the Ohio State men’s cross country team, was named Big Ten runner of the week Tuesday by the conference office. The returning All-American from Fresno, Ohio led the Buckeyes to a 10th-place team finish at the 2005 NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday with an eighth-place individual time of 23:56.

Olinger’s eighth-place finish is his highest of his career at the pre-national meet and his third Top 20 placing at the event in the last three seasons. In 2004, he finished 14th after taking 18th his sophomore year. His time of 23:56 Saturday counts as a career-best in an 8-kilometer race.

Olinger was named Big Ten runner of the week last Oct. 12 after winning the All-Ohio individual championship. Ohio State runners have claimed the Big Ten weekly award three times this season. Alex Bailey earned the distinction last week after his runner-up and career-best time at the 2005 All-Ohio meet, while John Ealy was named ROW after winning the Xavier Invitational Sept. 10.

Olinger and the Buckeyes have this week off in preparation for the 2005 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis Oct. 30.
