COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore Jamee Juarez has been named the Big Ten softball co-player of the week, the conference announced Tuesday. In the Buckeyes’ first action of the season, Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) led Ohio State to a 4-1 record and third-place finish at the Florida Atlantic University Doubletree Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

At the plate, Juarez went 7-for-10 (.700) during the weekend and fashioned a 2-1 record in the circle with a 0.78 ERA in 18 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts. In the field, she posted a 1.000 fielding percentage on nine opportunities in the circle and at third base. Juarez had at least one hit in each of Ohio State’s five games, going 3-for-5 in the first two games and 4-for-5 in the final three games when she also notched both her two pitching wins.

Juarez pitched a two-hit shutout and did not allow a base runner until the sixth inning against N.C. State Feb. 19 as the Buckeyes took a 2-0 win. Against Pittsburgh later that same day, Juarez came off the bench to provide a game-tying, pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game that OSU would win one batter later. The following day, again vs. Pittsburgh, Juarez went 2-for-2 at the plate, scored two runs and had an RBI, while at the same time pitching five shutout innings as the starting pitcher. After giving way to a relief pitcher, Juarez came back into the game to pitch the final two outs of the final innings of the 6-3 OSU win as Pittsburgh was attempting a rally.

Juarez shares the player of the week honor with Purdue’s DaQueta Johnson, while Michigan’s Lorilyn Wilson earned the league’s pitcher of the week award.
