Gene Smith, Ohio State University Vice President and Director of Athletics, was named 2010 Sports Business Journal Athletic Director of the Year Thursday at the New York Marquis in New York City. A finalist for the 2008 SBJ AD of the Year award, Smith has helped guide the Ohio State department of athletics to successes unseen before at the university both in the arena of competition and beyond the athletics boundaries.

Ohio State stood second in the latest update of the 2010 Directors’ Cup standings April 29 and just this week celebrated the achievements of a record 503 scholar-athletes (3.0 Grade-Point Average or better) at a ceremony held on campus. Ohio State also was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics for its outstanding acts of sportsmanship during the 2009 football home opener vs. the U.S. Naval Academy.

Dick Baddour from the University of North Carolina, Gene Bleymaier from Boise State University, Dan Guerrero from UCLA, Mal Moore from the University of Alabama joined Smith as nominees in the Athletic Director of the Year category for the 2010 Sports Business Awards presented by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

The Sports Business Awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the business of sports for the period from January 1, 2009 through February 28, 2010. Athletic directors from colleges and universities in the United States were eligible.
