Columbus, Ohio – No. 1 seed Northwestern downed the No. 6 seed Ohio State women’s tennis team, 4-0, in the final match at the Big Ten championship Sunday at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. The loss by the Buckeyes (13-13, 6-5 Big Ten) ended a five-match winning streak that included three consecutive wins in three days at the championship. The Buckeyes previously defeated No. 11 seed Penn State, No. 3 seed No. 20 ranked Illinois and No. 7 seed Iowa. The No. 11 ranked Wildcats (23-4, 9-1), playing on their home courts, earned their sixth consecutive Big Ten championship and the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

As tournament runners-up, the Buckeyes, who finished the regular season tied for fifth in the Big Ten improved to second place in the final Big Ten standings.

For the first time at the Big Ten championship, the Buckeyes failed to win the doubles point. For Northwestern, No. 3 ranked duo Christelle Grier and Jessica Rush scored an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 position over Ohio State’s Erica Fisk (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Jackie Leskovar (Sr., Cambridge, Ontario/N.C. State). At the No. 3 spot, Andrea Yung and Ruth Barnes downed Ohio State’s Emily DeCamilla (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Maryland) and Lindsey Adams (Jr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), 8-2.

In singles, No. 3 ranked Grier beat Lindsay Williams (Sr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 position while No. 47 Rush topped Fisk, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2. Northwestern’s Alexis Prousis defeated Leskovar at the No. 3 position by a 6-4, 6-4 margin to clinch the match for the Wildcats.

Next up, the Buckeyes will await the selection of the 64 NCAA tournament teams. The teams and first- and second-round sites will be announced between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on ESPNews May 5. Lineups for the 64 teams selected will be posted on the NCAA’s web site, www.ncaa.org, no later than 6 p.m.

The Buckeyes will look to extend their current school record-streak of five consecutive trips to the NCAA championship.
