COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) posted its third-consecutive shutout and improved to 3-0 on the year, downing West Virginia (2-1, 0-0 Big East), 7-0, Friday in Morgantown, W.Va. Against the Mountaineers, Ohio State was 6-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
The Buckeyes clinched the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. At the second spot, the tandem of Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) defeated Kelly Walsh and Monica Lyskawa, 8-4. At No. 3, Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) and Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) topped Stephanie LaFortune and Gabriela Blaskovicov, 8-4. Buckeyes Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) lost to Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival, 8-4, at No. 1
At No. 2 singles, Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) came back from a set down to defeat Percival, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. The other five Buckeye singles wins came in straight sets. Ruzimovsky topped Prinz, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 and O’Keefe was a 6-4, 6-3 winner against Lyskawa at No. 3. Mueller downed LaFortune at No. 4, 7-6, 6-3, and DiPastina beat Walsh (7-5, 6-2) at No. 5. Julie Voss (So., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) downed Ashley Constantine, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Buckeyes are 13-0 all-time against West Virginia.
Ohio State returns to action with three matches next weekend. The squad will face Marquette at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 to open play. Feb. 11, the Buckeyes will host Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 6 p.m. All matches will be held at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
