COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (13-7; 3-2 Big Ten) resumed Big Ten play Saturday with a 6-1 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. The match was held at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio.
For the seventh time this season, the Buckeyes swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, the tandem of Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) defeated Sasha Abraham and Andreea Niculescu, 8-4. At No. 2, Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) outlasted Katelyn BeVard and Jenny Shular, 9-8 (5). At No. 3, Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) topped Dorothy Dohanics and Lauren Holzberg by the score of 8-6.
In singles, at No. 1, O’Keefe defeated Abraham, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 2, Ruzimovsky downed Niculescu by the score of 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3, Blackmore dropped BeVard, 6-3, 6-2. Finucane defeated Schular, 6-2, 6-3, At the No. 4 spot. At No. 5, Messmer fell to Holzberg in a tie-breaker, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6). At No. 6, DiPastina defeated Dohanics, 7-6, 6-4.
The Buckeyes will be back in action Sunday when they host the No. 30-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The match will begin at 11 a.m. at the Stickney Tennis Center. In the case of inclement weather, the match will be held at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
