COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team (11-7; 2-2 Big Ten) stepped out of Big Ten play as the Buckeyes defeated the Xavier Musketeers, 6-1, Wednesday in the first game of a double-header. The match was held at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus and was the first outdoor match of the season.
The Buckeyes swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, the tandem of Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, N.J.) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) downed Kristen Clary and Kara Courtney, 8-3. At No. 2, Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) defeated Sarah Potts and Emily Tuchscherer by the score of 8-5. At No. 3, Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Emily Howard (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) defeated Jeanette Feider and Kate Lohner, 8-3.
In singles at No. 1, Ruzimovsky defeated Clary, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Blackmore dropped Courtney, 6-4, 6-4. Finucane defeated Vilines, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. At No. 4, Messmer downed Papa by the score of 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5, DiPastina won over Tuchscherer, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 6, Nidhi Shah (So., Mumbai, India/Mithibai) was defeated by Potts, 6-3, 6-4.
The Buckeyes will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in game two of the double-header. The match will be held at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus.
