COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team bounced back from a loss Friday night to defeat Michigan State in East Lansing Saturday, 153-90. The Buckeyes, now 2-1, captured 11 of the 13 events swum.

The women kicked off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The relay team of Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), Erin Church (Jr., Morrow, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Elanie Chan (So., Hong Kong/Hepp Yunn) stopped the clock first at 1:47.66.

In the next event, Farriss Blaskovits (Fr., Nepean, Ontario/Mother Theresa) picked up her first collegiate win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:32.51. Classmate Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich/Mercy) finished behind her in the second-place spot with 10:34.38.

The freestyle events proved to be a strong suit for the team, as Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen), Annie Rennebohm (Jr., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Chan took two more wins for the team in stroke. Buelens’ first win came in the 200-yard freestyle when she stopped the clock at 1:52.59. Rennebohm contributed to the event with a third-place finish (1:55.98). She recorded her first dual-meet win of the season in the 100-yard freestyle (53.86). The win also was Rennebohm’s first win in a conference dual-meet. Chan finished the 50-yard freestyle in 24.20 for the win in the sprint event.

Despite swimming with an infected impacted wisdom tooth, Gunenc placed second in the 200-yard individual medley. She finished the race in 2:09.71- currently the team’s fastest time of the season. She also pulled out a win in her signature event, the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.17). Courtney Brayman (So., Pitssford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) hit the wall next in her lifetime best time of 2:11.40. “Gulsah was a trooper today,” Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. “She showed up and did some great things”

Buelens added another win to her resume with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.42). Blaskovits was not far behind, finishing third in the race with a time of 5:11.49. Freshman Jill Lockhart took second in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:07.26. The women swept the 200-yard breaststroke. Church lead the Buckeyes, touching in ahead of the group with a season-best time of 2:22.81. Freshmen Colleen Schweitzer (Highlands Park, Colo/Highlands Ranch) and Megan Alexander (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) claimed second and third place, respectively.

Buckeye divers contributed to the team’s win with yet another successful meet on the boards. Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind/North Central) added a third consecutive win on the 3-meter (306.16) to her undefeated record this season. Chelsea Davis (So., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington-Kilbourne) and Anesa Beard (Sr., Franklin, Ind/Franklin Community) secured the next two spots with the respective scores of 283.88 and 267.82. Davis and Beard again posted winning scores, with Davis winning the 1-meter with a score of 296.55 and Beard taking second with 256.05.

Buelens, Chan, Rennebohm and Lockhart were responsible for the team’s final win of the meet in the last event. They finished the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:33.36.

“We swam much better today we were much more competitive,” Fleck said. “We had quite a few really great swims. We showed up today. It was great to see the team rebound like this.”

Ohio State will return to action, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. with a home meet against Toledo at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
