Sept. 2, 2004
Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten) opened up its 2004 home slate Thursday night with an 8-1 victory over Xavier (0-3, 0-0 Atlantic 10) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State junior Lisa Grubb, who missed all but one game of the 2003 season after suffering an injury in the opening contest, made her return to Jesse Owens Stadium with a pair of goals and senior Heather Miller accounted for a trio of scores as the Buckeyes dominated play, out-shooting the Musketeers by a 29-2 count. The three goals by Miller tied an Ohio State record for most goals in a single match. Miller is the fifth Buckeye all-time to reach three scores with the last coming Sept. 8, 2000 by Lindsay Eckles. “I think we did a great job putting the ball in the back of the net tonight,” Walker said. “This was really the first time that I had seen everyone playing together because of my absence in at the Olympics. I think my assistants have done a great job in preparing us for this season.” In the opening moments, the Buckeyes exploded with a pair of goals within the first seven minutes of the game as junior Danielle Dietrich played a hand on both scores, burying a shot from 25 yards out at 39:19 before assisting on Grubb’s first goal of 2004 just one minute later at 38:19. The goal was Dietrich’s second in the last two matches and her second assist of 2004. Grubb’s score was her first since a two-goal outing in the 2003 opener against Indiana State. She was injured in the match and missed the remainder of the season. After taking a 2-0 advantage into the intermission, Ohio State opened the scoring the second stanza as well, when H. Miller converted a penalty kick after a Xavier foul stopped the clock at 34:23. Less than a minute later, Grubb recorded her second tally of the night, accepting a pass from freshman Carla Arbulu and hitting the back of the net from inside the right corner of the 6-yard box. Senior Liz Mumley added to the scoring at the 27:39 mark of the second half, driving past three Musketeers and beating XU reserve keeper Natalie Baker for her first goal of 2004. Less than five minutes later, Miller scored her second goal in the 67th minute and again netted at shot less than 10 minutes later (76:15) to set a career high. Xavier fired their first shot of the contest in the 79th minute as midfielder Ashley Valdiserri netted XU’s first goal of the season to shave the OSU lead to 7-1. Ohio State answered less than 20 seconds later as junior Colleen Hoban completed the scoring onslaught, burying a rebounded shot by Jackie Lafond at 80:03. OSU Seniors Jen Heaney and Emily Haynam and junior Shannon Neely shared the goalkeeper duties with Heaney scoring the win. Assisting on scores for Ohio State were Dietrich, Lafond, senior Paige Harrison and Arbulu, who finished with a pair of assists. The 8-1 victory by OSU Thursday was its largest margin of victory since downing Youngstown State, 7-0, at JOMS Sept. 21, 2003. Ohio State’s all-time record for goals in a match is 14 by the 1995 squad against Robert Morris on Oct. 12. Ohio State faces Conference USA opponent Louisville Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Louisville, Ky. Louisville will provide live stats through gametracker at www.uoflsports.com.
