Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (9-2-3, 5-0-3) extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches Friday at Minnesota (5-9, 1-7 Big Ten) with a 4-0 victory at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Buckeyes struck early with a pair of goals in the opening moments of each half, while Danielle Dietrich tied an Ohio State record with three goals in the match, coming in the 18th, 49th and 66th minutes. The shutout served as Ohio State’s second straight and sixth of 2004.
“Our team played extremely well tonight,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. “The number of points shared in our attack is a great indicator at the variety of scoring threats we possess.”
Ohio State wasted little time getting on the board in the eighth minute Friday night. Lisa Grubb (Jr., Portage, Mich.) advanced down the side of the Minnesota zone and sent a cross through the Golden Gopher 6-yard box that found Liz Mumley (Sr., Woodbridge, Va.), who deposited a shot into the left-hand corner of the UM net from 10 yards for the early 1-0 lead. The goal served as Mumley’s fourth this season, while Grubb added assist No. 3.
Grubb ignited another score less than 11 minutes later at in the 18th minute, heading a shot toward the UM goal that was blocked, but Danielle Dietrich (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) gathered the rebound and sent her first goal of the night into the back of the net.
In the second half, Ohio State again wasted no time as Dietrich netted goal No. 2, beating Gopher keeper Molly Schneider in the 49th minute. Emily Gilbert (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) assisted on the play, notching her first point of the 2004 season.
Dietrich gathered another carom in the 66th minute and connected for her third goal of the night after a misfire from teammate Lara Dickenmann (Fr., Kreins, Switzerland). The assist for Dickenmann is her sixth of the season, moving her into the team lead.
Dietrich’s three scores helped her reach eight for the season and tie the Ohio State record as she joined fellow teammate Heather Miller (Sr., Centerville, Ohio), who netted three goals in an 8-1 win over Xavier Sept. 2. Overall, Dietrich is the fifth Buckeye all-time to reach three goals in a single match. Former OSU standout Lisa Suttmiller (1994-97) scored three goals twice in her career.
Ohio State held Minnesota without a shot on goal until the 18-minute mark of the first half and permitted just two attempts for the match. Overall, the Buckeyes also held a decided edge – 23-6 – in total shots.
Emily Hayman (Sr., Westerville, Ohio) and Jen Heaney (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) shared the duties in the Buckeye net. Haynam accounted for the win, upping her record on the year to 6-1-2.
Ohio State continues its road swing at 1 p.m. (CDT) Sunday at Iowa.
