MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (8-17-2, 5-10-2 WCHA) suffered a defeat to the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers (23-2-2, 17-1-1 WCHA), 5-3, Friday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The Buckeyes and the Golden Gophers are meeting for their second series this season.
Minnesota’s Krissy Wendell put the first mark on the scoreboard at 7:28. UM’s Wendell scored a short-handed goal at 10:00, for Minnesota’s second goal of the game. Immediately following the goal, Ohio State’s Lindsey Steblen (Jr., Clayton, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Lake Placid Rockets) received a penalty for high-sticking and 15 seconds later OSU’s Emily Hudak (Sr., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing) obtained a penalty for interference, causing a four-on-three Minnesota power play. The Gophers’ Natalie Darwitz took advantage of the opportunity, scoring at 11:13. Ohio State’s Hudak and Erin O’Grady (Jr., London, Ontario) set up freshman Jana Harrigan (Fr., Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) for a power play goal at 17:18, marking Harrigan’s 10th goal of the season. Ohio State and Minnesota were tied with nine shots at the end of the first period.
Minnesota’s Allie Sanchez started the second period off with a goal 51 seconds into the action. The Gophers’ Winny Brodt scored Minnesota’s fifth goal of the game at 2:05. The Gophers obtained the only two penalties during the period. Despite not scoring in the stanza, the Buckeyes did not give up. Ohio State tallied seven shots to Minnesota’s nine.
The Buckeyes stepped up their pace in the third period, recording nine shots and only allowing Minnesota four. OSU’s penalty-killing unit stopped both of Minnesota’s power-play opportunities. Ohio State’s Meaghan Mulvaney (So., Sylvania, Ohio/Honeybaked) scored her fifth goal of the season off Jeni Creary’s (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) rebounded shot at 7:00. OSU cut Minnesota’s lead to two, when Shana Frost (Sr., Frankford, Ontario/Beatrice North York Aeros) tipped in her fifth goal of the season from a shot by Jennifer Desson Jennifer Desson (So., Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres). Katie Frohreich (Sr., Baudette, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) also assisted on the goal. The Buckeyes outshot the Gophers 25-22. The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power play. Ohio State held Minnesota on three of its four power-play opportunities.
Ohio State’s goalkeeper April Stojak (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) saved 17 shots in 60:00 minutes of play. Minnesota’s Horak recorded 22 saves in 60:00 minutes.
Ohio State faces No. 3 Minnesota at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
