Postgame Quotes

Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the fans
“First, I want to thank the students and the fans tonight. They created an incredible environment. They have put forth the same effort as our players have.”

On the game
“It was a hard fought college basketball game. Our guys did a good job playing with our game plan. I think five guys in double figures mean we played an unselfish basketball game. We executed what we had in mind when we played zone and one-on-one.”

On defeating five ranked opponents
“We have had a difficult schedule and we’re a good basketball team. With the challenges this team has had and playing five ranked teams some on the road I hope it says we play some good basketball.”

Evan Turner, sophomore guard/forward
On making corrections from the last game against Minnesota
“We looked at the film and it was obvious they (Minnesota) out toughed us in the last game. We knew what we had to do coming in and we went out and did it.”

On Minnesota
“They are a great team. They know what their roles are. They play hard and play smart.”

On what five wins over ranked opponents says about the Buckeyes
“We can play. After Dave’s (Lighty) injury, we struggled to find our identity. Now we are starting to click and are playing well as a team. Five wins over ranked teams shows we are a good team.”

Jon Diebler, sophomore guard
On Ohio State’s offensive diversity
“We are a hard team to match up with because we are a versatile team, especially with Evan (Turner) at the forward spot. Our big guys are playing well and we can get scoring from a lot of different guys.”

On playing against the Gophers’ zone
“We weren’t ready for their zone last time and didn’t execute much of anything against it. Tonight, Evan did a great job of creating shots in the high post against the zone and Dallas (Lauderdale) and B.J. (Mullens) were more aggressive on the boards.”

Jeremie Simmons, junior guard
On bouncing back from the Purdue game
“I had a couple of early turnovers against Purdue which hurt me early on. Luckily, PJ came in and had a great game. I felt I played better tonight. My shots were falling and my teammates were really moving and helping me out.”

Tubby Smith, Minnesota head coach
On Minnesota’s play
“Well, the game was a good character test after we humiliated at Michigan State. Our kids showed a lot of heart and strength in a game where we thought we were still in it.”

On Minnesota’s turnovers
“It’s disappointing to see because a lot of them were unforced turnovers. We have guards that don’t look up and it’s just something that we’ll have to get better at.”

On Ohio State’s play compared to the last meeting
“I didn’t think they played that much more physically but they did set the tone early. Dallas (Lauderdale) was pretty physical and our kids handled it pretty well.”
