Ohio State hosts George Washington in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at historic St. John Arena. Tip is set for 1:50 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

NOTING OHIO STATE

  • Ohio State heads to the NCAA Tournament for the 25th time and will open the tournament at home as a No. 3 seed against No. 14 seed George Washington on Saturday.
  • Saturday’s game will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
  • Ohio State is playing NCAA Tournament games at home for the 12th time in program history and have won the last six games.
  • The Buckeyes finished the regular season and Big Ten Tournament by winning 11 of its last 12 games since its three-game losing skid in mid-January.
  • Stephanie Mavunga has averaged nearly 19 points per game over the last nine games and leads the team with 17 double-doubles on the year.
  • Mavunga and Kelsey Mitchell were both named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after leading the Buckeyes to their first title since 2011. Mitchell was named the tournaments’ Most Outstanding Player after averaging 25.7 points, 4.7 assists and 4.0 three-pointers per game in the three games.
  • Mitchell is the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer, either male or female, with 3,363 career points and is currently third in NCAA history. She is just 30 points behind Jackie Stiles (Missouri St.) for second place.
  • Mitchell has made a three-pointer in an NCAA record 90-straight games.

 

Buckeyes In The NCAA Tournament                          

  • Ohio State is making its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • OSU has an overall record of 28-24 in the NCAA Tournament.
  • OSU has made the Sweet 16 eleven times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2016, 2017).
  • The Buckeyes have advanced to the Sweet 16 in each of the last two years which marks the first back-to-back stint since the run of five-straight appearances from 1985-89.
  • OSU has been to the Elite 8 three times (1985, 1987, 1993).
  • The best tournament run for the Buckeyes was their runner-up finish in 1993.
  • This is just the fourth time the Buckeyes have earned a No. 3-seed and the first since 2009. OSU has advanced to the Sweet 16 in each of its previous three times earning a No. 3 seed.
  • Overall, this is the 11th time Ohio State has been a No. 3 seed or higher in the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes have advanced to at least the Sweet 16 in eight of the 10 previous occurrences.
  • Kelsey Mitchell is averaging 24.3 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and has made at least two three-pointers in her each of her eight NCAA Tournament games.

  • This will be the 13th time Ohio State has hosted the NCAA Tournament opening round games.
  • The Buckeyes have a record of 13-2 in their previous 11 years of hosting games.
  • Ohio State hosted the first and second round games of the 2013 tournament but did not receive a bid to participate.

 Buckeyes vs. The Columbus Field                          

  • This will be the first meeting all-time between Ohio State and George Washington.
  • The Buckeyes have a 34 record all-time vs. LSU. The teams last played a home-and-home series in 2010 and 2011 with Ohio State winning both games.
  • OSU and LSU have met once in the NCAA Tournament in 1986. The Tigers won that Sweet 16 meeting 81-80.
  • The Buckeyes are 4-1 all-time vs. Central Michigan but the teams haven’t met since 1992.
