Sophomore Amy Meier tied for first after opening round of 1-under 70

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s golf team opened its spring slate with a team score of 309 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Competing at the par 71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif., the Buckeyes are currently tied for sixth after 18 holes.

The Buckeyes are just four strokes from breaking into the Top 5 and are currently tied with Big Ten foe Michigan State. Defending tournament champ Southern California currently leads the 13-team field after an opening round of 290.

Leading both the Buckeyes and the individual field is Amy Meier. The sophomore from Rochester Hills, Mich., is currently tied for first with Tiffany Lua of UCLA at 1-under 70.

Opening with back-to-back birdies, Meier was 1-under after making the turn. She slipped with bogeys on hole Nos. 3 and 4, but charged back with a pair of birdies to finish the round under par. Throughout the day, Meier notched six birdies, the most of the round.

After an opening round of 79, sophomore Susana Benavides is tied for 37th after making par on 12 holes.  

One stroke back with rounds of 80 are senior co-captain In Hong Lim and junior Vicky Villanueva who are tied for 48th. Throughout the day, Lim carded two birdies, while Villanueva fired one.

Rounding out the Buckeye lineup is sophomore co-captain Rachel Rohanna who is tied for 64th after a round of 83.

Competing as an individual, junior Nara Shin is also tied for 37th after a round of 79 which included a pair of birdies on the front nine.

The second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge will take place Tuesday will tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. (PT), and concludes with a final round Wednesday. Live scoring for the event is available at www.golfstat.com.
