Senior Emma Jandel ties for 12th as four Buckeyes finish in Top 21
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Ohio State women’s golf team started its 2010 spring slate with a bang by taking third with a score of 897 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Wednesday in Palos Verdes, Calif. The third-place finish matches the Buckeyes’ best performance in the 15 years at the tournament. The three-day, 54-hole event was held on the par 71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.
It was a tight race against nationally-ranked teams near the top as Ohio State edged fourth-place UCLA and defending NCAA champ Arizona State by a stroke. Denver and Duke tied for sixth with scores of 900.
“I’m proud of the effort our team made considering the lack of tournament time in the last couple of months,” Therese Hession, 19-year head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “The team will gain confidence from this performance against nationally-ranked teams and we look forward to using this as a springboard until our spring schedule.”
Southern California, who led from the first day, held off regional foe Pepperdine to take the title at 24-over 876. The Waves were runners-up at 879, but had the medalist with Lisa McCloskey maintaining her spot atop the leaderboard, winning by three strokes at 2-under 211.
Ohio State had four Buckeyes finish in the Top 21 of the individual standings, led by senior captain Emma Jandel. The Dayton, Ohio, native had steady rounds throughout the event with scores of 74-75-74 to tie for 12th at 10-over 223.
After two rounds of 73, freshman Rachel Rohanna struggled on the final day with a score of 79. She still placed in the Top 20 with a tie for 19th at 225.
Just a stroke back were junior In Hong Lim and freshman Susana Benavides, tying for 21st. Lim carded a 78 on her final 18 holes while Benavides fired the best round of the day for Ohio State with a 72.
Concluding the Buckeye lineup was sophomore Vicky Villanueva who had her best round of the tournament with a 76 to tie for 64th at 236.
