COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) to Iowa on Saturday night in St. John Arena. With the win, the Hawkeyes (18-13, 7-11 B1G) completed the home-and-home season sweep of the Buckeyes (14-15, 7-11 B1G).
Luisa Schirmer had her eighth straight match in double figures behind a team-high 16 kills. Ashley Wenz chipped in seven kills, five digs and four blocks (1s, 3a). Madison Smeathers and Ana Beatriz Franklin had six kills apiece while Lauren Witte finished with five. Becca Mauer notched 35 assists on the night.
Defensively, Hannah Gruensfelder posted a match-best 19 digs. Mauer and Franklin scooped nine balls each. Smeathers had three block assists and Schirmer tallied seven digs.
SET 1: Ohio State and Iowa locked the opening set score 17 times. The Hawkeyes went up 20-18 but the Buckeyes managed to tie things at 23-all thanks to kills by Schirmer and Franklin. Iowa responded with a pair of kills for a 25-23 victory.
SET 2: The second stanza went much like the first, this time featuring 16 ties and eight lead changes. Iowa called for time after a kill by Wenz and Smeathers-Wenz block gave the Scarlet & Gray a 23-22 edge. Out of the break, the Hawkeyes scored the last three points to close the set, 25-23.
SET 3: Schirmer hit .636 in the third frame behind eight kills. The Buckeyes kept the frame close until the Hawkeyes started to pull away to lead by as many as nine. A service error wrapped up the set in Iowa’s favor, 25-18.
Ohio State plays its final road match of the regular season when it visits Maryland on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
