COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team suffered a 7-2 road loss to No. 4 Wisconsin Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 14-14-2 overall and 11-14-1 in the WCHA, while the Badgers improve to 22-7-1 and 16-7-1 in the WCHA.
Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the first period. UW’s Nicole Uliasz scored a Badger goal at 9:44. Wisconsin’s second goal came at the end of the period when Jackie Friesen scored at 19:56. The Badgers posted 13 shots to the Buckeyes four in the stanza.
In the second period, Wisconsin recorded two additional goals, while Ohio State closed out the stanza with a goal of its own. UW’s Friesen and Grace Hutchins scored the Badgers third and fourth goals of the game at 3:35 and 11:32, respectively. The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard with a power-play goal in the final seconds of the second period. Senior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) scored a goal into the back side of the net on a pass from junior Jana Harrigan (Jr., Burlington, Ontario) at 19:31. UW outshot OSU 17-9 in the second period.
Ohio State cut Wisconsin’s lead to two as the Buckeyes opened the third period with an even-strength goal. OSU Freshman Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.) pushed in the puck for her second goal of the season at 1:15. Senior Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) and Harrigan assisted on the goal. Wisconsin’s Friesen recorded a hat trick as she scored for the Badgers at 9:18. OSU goalie Melissa Glaser (Rockford, Ill.) stopped Wisconsin’s Lindsay Macy on a penalty shot at 7:59. UW secured its victory with a power play at 11:52.
Ohio State senior goalie Glaser recorded 32 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. Wisconsin’s Megan Horras tallied 18 saves in 60 minutes.
Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 39-20. The Buckeyes held the Badgers scoreless on five-of-six power plays, while the Buckeyes converted on 1-of-4 power-play chances.
Ohio State completes its eight-game road stretch when the Buckeyes travel to face College Hockey America foe Niagara at 7 p.m. EST Feb. 18-19 in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
With two assists, Jana Harrigan extended her point streak to 14 games this season. During her stretch Harrigan has posted five goals and 16 assists for 21 points.
