COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (5-4; 0-2 Big Ten) was edged by the No. 4 Michigan State Spartans (11-1; 2-0 Big Ten), 3-2, in overtime Saturday in front of a season-high crowd of 249 at North Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes traded goals with the Spartans until MSU managed to secure the win in the extra stanza.

Michigan State’s Veerle Goudswaard put the Spartans on the scoreboard first 8:50 minutes into the first half. Veerle score the first point of the afternoon off a penalty corner and was assisted by Breanna Harpstead and Jessica Miller. The Buckeyes’ Leticia Fragapane (Jr., Mendoza, Argentina/Universidad Nacional de Cuyo) answered with an unassisted goal at 14:10, as she pushed the ball past MSU goalie Christina Kirkaldy from the right side of the net. Tied at one a piece, Annebet Beerman, with Goudswaard on the assist, drove Michigan State ahead, 2-1, when she deflected a shot off of a teammate into the goal.

Ohio State evened the score a little over ten minutes into the second half when Florencia Stier (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Washington) fired a shot into the backboard from the middle of the circle. As time expired in the stanza, neither team was able to score, forcing the game into extra periods. It would be the Buckeyes’ second-consecutive overtime game and fourth of the season.

Both teams got off to a quick start as they traded possession of the ball. At the 78:08 mark Goudswaard managed to steal the ball in the middle of the pitch for a breakaway score, securing the Spartans win.
