EAST LANSING, Mich. – Vanja Bukilić connected on a team-high 17 kills but the Ohio State women’s volleyball team was tripped up by Michigan State in four sets (25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-10) Wednesday night. The setback puts the Buckeyes at 12-15 overall and 3-12 in the Big Ten while the Spartans improve to 16-12 overall and 4-11 in conference action.
Bukilić had her 22nd match in double digits and recorded new career marks with 21 points and four service aces. Bia Franklin notched seven kills, seven digs, two assists, two solo blocks and an ace. Lauren Witte contributed eight kills while Becca Mauer posted her sixth double-double on 17 assists and a career-high 15 digs. Olivia Dailey chipped in 15 helpers and Camry Halm earned nine digs.
SET 1: Ohio State ran through its timeouts quickly as Michigan State got out to a 14-7 lead. The Buckeyes started to gain momentum as they used a 3-0 run to send the Spartans to their bench. Back on the court, the home squad came out swinging to take the set, 25-18.
SET 2: After falling behind early, the Buckeyes tied the frame at 9-9 thanks to five straight points, punctuated by a solo rejection from Franklin. The teams traded points until kills by Witte and Franklin gave OSU a 21-18 advantage to force a Spartan timeout. MSU responded by scoring the next three points to lock things at 21-all and send Ohio State to its sideline. It was still anyone’s game after the break but back-to-back kills by Bukilić sealed the set, 26-24.
SET 3: The Spartans needed a breather when the Buckeyes jumped out to an 8-3 lead. Michigan State bounced back to knot the tally at 17-17 and scored the last four points to claim a 25-19 winner.
SET 4: MSU led for the entirety of the final frame to secure the match on a 25-10 decision.
Ohio State meets up with Maryland in Columbus on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
