Dec. 10, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sixty-eight Ohio State student-athletes were named to the 2002 Big Ten Academic All-Conference Team for the fall, the league announced Tuesday. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, a student-athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. In all, 557 conference student-athletes were honored.

The Buckeye football team placed 27 team members on the academic list. Women’s soccer had 11 honorees. Men’s cross country was next with 10 members followed by men’s soccer with eight. Women’s volleyball, field hockey and women’s cross country each had four members.

Two Buckeyes maintained perfect grade-point averages. Sophomore women’s soccer player Heather Miller (Centerville, Ohio), a business major, and junior Sjaan Gerth (Belgrave, Ontario), a biochemistry major and member of the men’s cross country team, both posted a 4.00 GPA. Mechanical engineering major Jonathan White (Sr., Sylvania, Ohio) and chemical engineering major Derrick Butler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), both members of the men’s cross country team, had GPA’s of 3.92 and 3.96, respectively.
