Mother’s Day 5K looks to raise donations for 2nd & 7 Foundation
In one of its two spring charitable initiatives, the Ohio State Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) will host the inaugural 2nd & 7 Foundation Mother’s Day 5K May 11 on The Ohio State University campus. Registration and packet pick-up for the race opens at 8:30 a.m. across from the College of Veterinary Medicine located a 1900 Coffey Rd. with the 5K run/walk beginning at 10 a.m.
The entry fee for the race costs $20 when purchased before May 4 and includes a commemorative t-shirt. Entry for the 5K can be purchased May 4 through race day for $25. Event t-shirt are guaranteed to pre-registered participants only.
Proceeds from the mother’s day race will be donated to the 2nd & 7 Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Columbus started by former Buckeyes Ryan Miller (1993-96), Mike Vrabel (1993-96) and Luke Fickell (1993-96).
Charlie Billingsley, a senior on the men’s lacrosse team and SAAB member, has worked in conjunction with the foundation to organize the event, starting event planning in 2007.
“Last summer, SAAB wanted to come up with a way to help the 2nd & 7 Foundation,” Billingsley said. “Most every team volunteers through the program, reading to school aged children around the Columbus area during the academic year so we wanted to give back to the foundation started by former Ohio State student-athletes.”
Vrabel, a member of the New England Patriots’ 2002, ’04 and ’05 Super Bowl teams, will kick the event off at the start line located across from the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. The race will take runners and walkers through the university’s Columbus campus and ends in Ohio Stadium where Buckeye wrestling head coach Tom Ryan will be featured as a guest speaker. Participants will receive a goody bag at the end of the race containing Ohio State gifts like water bottles, cozies and hats. Food and drinks will also be available.
SAAB’s second fundraiser this spring, Buckeyes Got Talent, the second-annual Ohio State student-athlete talent show, is scheduled at 7 p.m. May 14 in St. John Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. for an autograph session with Buckeye student-athletes that will last until 6:45 p.m., allowing the contestants time to prepare for the main event.
General admission tickets for the event can be purchased at the door for $5 with Ohio State student tickets discounted to $3 and no charge for children ages 6 and under. All proceeds from the Ohio State student-athlete talent show will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus. SAAB looks to better its $1,300 donation raised for the organization at the event in 2007.
