Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Scoring three runs in the fourth inning, the Ohio State softball team (4-1) broke open a close game against Pittsburgh Sunday to down the Panthers, 6-3, at the Florida Atlantic University Doubletree Classic. OSU sophomore Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) pitched five shutout innings and went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Buckeyes to a third place finish in the tournament.

Juarez struck out five Pittsburgh batters before junior Andrea Tribuzi (Plano, Texas/Plano East) took over in relief for the sixth inning and 1/3 of the seventh. Juarez came back into the game to pitch in relief of Tribuzi with one out in the seventh inning to finish off the Panthers.

Sophomore Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, the first of which scored Juarez to give OSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning, which is where the score would stand until Ohio State’s three-run fourth inning. In that frame, base hits by Douglas and senior Ashley Cutcliff (Zionsville, Ind./U. of Florida) started the Buckeyes’ scoring run.

Juarez added an RBI double in the fifth inning and freshman Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) drove in a run in the sixth inning. Senior Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) provided an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Freshman Liz Caputo (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and junior Nicole Lancaster (Magnolia, Ohio/Sandy Valley) added singles for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State had beat Pittsburgh Saturday 8-7 in the Buckeyes’ final at bat to claim the No. 3 seed in Sunday’s seeded portion of the tournament. Pittsburgh, the No. 4 seed, falls to 1-4 overall.

The Buckeye will return to action next weekend at the Palm Springs Invitational in Palm Springs, Calif.
