PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ohio State senior Kristi DeVries held Massachusetts without a run or a hit through the first four innings of play, but the Buckeyes fell to a late UMass rally to drop their 2004 season opener, 8-0, in the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Tournament.

The game, held at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix, was the first of five games that Ohio State will play in the tournament. Two of Ohio State’s games, including a contest Friday afternoon vs. Cal State-Northridge, will be played at Arizona State’s Farrington Stadium in Tempe.

Ohio State (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) loaded the bases in the first inning and again in the fifth, but was held from scoring by UMass sophomore pitcher Jenna Busa, who improves to 1-0 on the season and 4-0 in her college career.

Four Buckeyes collected one single each in the game, including freshmen Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) and Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and juniors Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) and Jennifer Johnson (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada).

DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) struck out three hitters and allowed six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) worked the final 1.1 innings, striking out one hitter and allowing five runs, but just one of which were earned.
