COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team blasted the Michigan State Spartans today after posting three home runs in the fourth inning, including a Stacy Roth grand slam, to secure an 8-4 win at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich. Ohio State is now 19-18 overall and 2-5 in conference action, while the Spartans fall to 26-17 on the season and 4-5 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes opened the bottom of the first inning notching two runs off one hit. With the bases loaded, Chrissy Fowler was hit by MSU pitcher Keri Dejong to advance Anna Smith home. Ohio State added another run when Jennifer Link scored on a wild pitch.
Michigan State tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning, but Ohio State rallied back with a string of big hits. Sarah West nailed a solo home run to leftfield to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead. OSU loaded the bases when Rogeanna Hottinger was walked, Holly English reached first on an MSU throwing error and Anna Smith singled to the third baseman. Stacy Roth followed with a blast to the leftfield wall, posting her first grand slam of the season. Renae Weigel then followed with another home run blast to centerfield to push the lead to 8-2. She also tied the OSU all-time record for home runs with a total of 12.
Ohio State squashed Michigan State’s rally in the sixth inning, but the Spartans did post one more run before falling, 8-4. Starting pitcher Toni Hileman went five innings, giving up two runs, walking two and striking out one. She is now 5-6 for the season. Katie Chain, who relieved Hileman in the sixth, posted one run and struck out one in two innings of action. The Buckeyes will next compete on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Cleveland State on the road. Ohio State will then have a six-game homestand, beginning with Minnesota on Friday at 2 p.m.
