COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (1-1-0; 1-1-0 WCHA) skated past St. Cloud State (1-1-0; 1-1-0 WCHA), 3-1, Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes and Huskies split the two game series as SCSU won, 2-1, Friday night.
Ohio State scored two goals within 35 seconds to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Junior Crystal Sayther (Burnsville, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season on a pass in front of the net from freshman Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan) at 16:33. Freshman Shelby Aldous (LsSalle, Ontario) followed with the second Buckeye goal at 17:08, assisted by freshman Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn.). OSU outshot SCSU 10-3 in the first stanza.
The Buckeyes were not able to put the puck in the net despite outshooting the Huskies 12 to five in the second period.
In the third period, St. Cloud State came out strong looking for a comeback as the squad outshot OSU 15-3. OSU’s Heywood scored at the 10 minute mark. Junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) and freshman Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.) assisted on the goal. St. Cloud State’s Kristy Oonincx scored the Huskies lone goal of the game at 17:17.
OSU goalie Erika Vanderveer (So., Bradford, Ontario) played in only her 11th game in net and posted 22 saves on 23 shots. St. Cloud State’s Lauri St. Jacques played the full 60 minutes and stopped 22-of-25 shots.
The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 26-23. Neither team was able to score on the power-play. Up next, Ohio State travels to Mankato, Minn. to face Minnesota State at 8:05 p.m. Oct. 15-16.
