Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team finished second overall at the 2005 Big Ten Championships Saturday at Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind. The regatta marked the second time in the six-year history the Buckeyes placed second.

Ohio State finished with 129 points, only one point behind first place Michigan State. The Spartans clinched their first Big Ten title after finishing first in the first varsity eight final. MSU is the third team in the Big Ten to win a conference title. Michigan has won four championships, while Ohio State has one.

“We raced very well,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “We were leading going into the last race, but Michigan State beat us in the end. It is very disappointing to come up short the past two years, but we raced the best we could across the board and I am proud of the team.”

After placing first in Heat 2 in the morning session, the first varsity eight was defeated by Michigan State in the Grand Final with a time of 6:23.50, 1.3 seconds behind MSU. Michigan came in third with a time of 6:25.34 and Wisconsin finished fourth with a time of 6:31.52.

The second varsity eight placed first in the morning session and continued their success into the afternoon clinching the conference title in the Grand Final. The Buckeyes finished with a time of 6:28.52, 0.94 seconds ahead of the Spartan boat.

The first varsity four finished third in the morning session to place in the Petite Final in the afternoon. OSU won the Petite Final in 7:33.60, to end up fifth place overall. Indiana finished second in the final with a time of 7:54.22 and Iowa came in third with a time of 8:23.01.

The second varsity four placed second in the Grand Final in the afternoon session with a time of 7:37.70, 5.81 seconds behind Wisconsin. In the morning session the Buckeyes also finished second with a time of 7:48.05, 11.15 seconds behind the Badgers. The first novice eight finished second in Heat 1 in the morning session with a time of 6:48.70 to advance into the Grand Finals in the afternoon. OSU finished second in the Grand Final with a time of 6:47.66. Minnesota came in first with a time of 6:44.20.

The second novice eight took second in the Grand Final in the afternoon session with a time of 7:11.45. The Buckeye boat was topped by Wisconsin with a time of 7:08.10. OSU finished second in Heat 1 in the morning session.

The Buckeyes will have a weekend off before traveling to the Central/South Region Championships, where they will vie for their third-consecutive regional title May 14-15 in Oak Ridge Tenn.
