COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior winger Eric Meloche recorded his first career hat trick to lead the Ohio State hockey team to an 8-1 win over the University of Windsor Sunday afternoon in Value City Arena.
The game was considered an exhibition by the NCAA and will not count as an official win for the Buckeyes. The statistics are also unofficial.
Ray Aho went the distance in goal for Ohio State and made 15 saves. Ohio State outshot Windsor 50-16, including 23-7 in the first period.
“I was happy with the way we played today,” OSU head coach John Markell said. “We did some things well. There were a few mental lapses here and there, but overall we showed today that we’re ready to enter league play.”
Ohio State begins CCHA play this weekend, travelling to Alaska-Fairbanks games on Friday and Saturday.
Freshman Miguel Lafleche opened the scoring against Windsor with a nifty wrist shot goal at 2:19 of the first period. It marked the second straight game that Lafleche has scored a goal on his first shift of the night.
Meloche got his first two goals later in the first period, the second of which came on the power-play at 18:48. Bot of Meloche’s first period goals were assisted by Mike McCormick and Andre Signoretti.
Yan Des Gagne scored OSU’s fourth goal at 11:15 in the second period after Ryan Jestadt created a turnover in the neutral zone. Six minutes later, Nick Ganga fired a shot from the crease past the Windsor goalie for his second goal in as many games.
Jason Crain and Meloche each scored power-play goals early in the third period. Jean-Francois Dufour scored OSU’s eight goal on a rebound from a Nick Ganga shot.
Signoretti and McCormick each had three assists. Ganga recorded two assists and a goal for OSU.
