COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University women’s volleyball program released its 2017 competition schedule on Monday (Apr. 10), unveiling a challenging 32-match slate which potentially rivals the team’s Top-10 strength of schedule from 2016.
“Our non-conference schedule has seven NCAA Tournament teams on it from last season and will challenge us from the very first match to the last,” Geoff Carlston, head coach, said.
In addition to the postseason advancement, Ohio State’s 12 non-conference opponents combined for a .701 winning percentage during the 2016 campaign (270-115). That same group also captured 10 conference crowns, bringing home regular season or tournament titles (or both as is the case for Lipscomb from the Atlantic Sun, Dayton from the Atlantic 10 and Conference USA’s Western Kentucky).
Ohio State heads west to Provo, Utah, in the season’s opening weekend (Aug. 25-26). The Buckeyes will face the host Cougars of BYU, Saint Louis and UTRGV. Next up is the 13th annual Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic Sept. 1-2 in Columbus, Ohio. St. John Arena welcomes in Lipscomb, Missouri State and Oakland for a round-robin competition.
Week three brings a road trip to Coastal Carolina University to take on the Chanticleers, Florida International and Notre Dame (Sept. 8-9). The Buckeyes then conclude the non-conference portion Sept. 15-16 with a short jaunt over to the University of Dayton to clash with the Flyers, Santa Clara and Western Kentucky.
The Big Ten 20-match gauntlet begins midweek, playing host to Maryland on Wednesday, Sept. 20 and wraps up Nov. 25 versus Illinois. The nation’s elite conference sent nine of 14 teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2016. `That team up north’ comes to town for a Saturday night showdown on Oct. 21.
