COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team defeated Yale, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The sweep marked OSU’s fourth of the season as the Buckeyes improve to 12-9-1 overall. The Yale Bulldogs fall to 10-10-0 on the year.

Both teams skated to a scoreless first period. The Buckeyes tallied eight shots to Yale’s four in the stanza. Ohio State had two power-play opportunities but was unable to capitalize on them.

In the second period, both teams went on an offensive attack, with Yale scoring the first two goals in 20 seconds and Ohio State following with three goals of its own. Yale’s Deena Caplette scored the first goal of the game at 5:37. Erin Duggan immediately followed 20 seconds later with a Bulldogs goal at 5:57. OSU senior defenseman Jaclyn Haines (Rossland, British Columbia) got the Buckeyes on the board with an unassisted goal from the point at 12:11. Ohio State tied the game at 2-all, when leading scorer Jeni Creary (Sr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) scored at 15:58. Jana Harrigan (Jr., Burlington, Ontario) and Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill.) assisted on the goal. Buckeye freshman Pamela Patterson (Miramichi, New Brunswick) scored her first collegiate goal and the eventual gamewinner at 18:14. Harrigan and Creary assisted on the play. OSU outshot Yale 13-10 in the stanza.

The teams were unable to score in the third period. Both teams tallied six shots. A minor scuffle broke out in OSU’s defensive zone and coincidental penalties were assessed to two Buckeyes and two Bulldogs at 17:08. Yale pulled its goalie with 1:02 remaining on a last minutes attempt to score with the six-man advantage but the Bulldogs were unsuccessful. Ohio State goalie Erika Vanderveer (So., Bradford, Ontario) posted 18 saves in 59:54 minutes. Yale’s goalie Sarah Love posted 24 saves in 58:58 minutes.

The Buckeyes outshot the Bulldogs 27-20. Ohio State held Yale scoreless on its one power-play chance. The Buckeyes were unable to score on their three power-play opportunities.

Ohio State concludes its six-game homestand when the Buckeyes take on No. 1 Minnesota at 7:05 p.m. Jan 21 and 22 in the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.

Notes

With her two assists, Jana Harrigan extended her point streak to six games this season. During her stretch Harrigan has posted four goals and eight assists for 12 points.

Freshman Pamela Patterson posted her best performance of the season as she scored her first collegiate goal Saturday and first collegiate assist Friday.

Ohio State improved to 9-4-1 at home this season. The Buckeyes are in the middle of a six-game homestand and improved to 2-2-0 following the sweep. OSU concludes its home stretch next weekend vs. Minnesota.

The sweep over Yale this weekend, marked OSU’s fourth sweep of the season.

With the sweep, Ohio State leads the all-time series 2-1-0 vs. Yale.
