Winners Eastern Michigan and Kevin Foley of Penn State set tournament scoring records
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team closed out action Sunday afternoon at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus with a final round score of 13-over 297 and a seventh-place finish. The Buckeyes had a team total of 894 (+42) for the two-day, 54-hole event held on the par 71, 7,451-yard Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club.
Two long-standing tournament records fell as Penn State’s Kevin Foley fired an 8-under 205 to run away with medalist honors and set the individual 54-hole record by five strokes. He broke the previous mark of 210 set by Ohio State’s Chris Smith in 1991 and matched by Tee McCabe of Miami University in 1998 and Jess Daley of Northwestern in 2000.
Despite Foley’s efforts for the Nittany Lions, who were tied with Eastern Michigan after 36 holes Saturday, the Eagles of EMU took the title with a score of 9-over 861. Eastern Michigan won by two strokes over runner-up Penn State and also set the 54-hole team scoring record by two strokes, besting the previous mark of 863 set by Ohio State in 1998.
Leading the way for the Buckeyes was Upper Arlington, Ohio, native Bo Hoag, who tallied a 222 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 21st place. The junior had a tough go during his final round, starting with a double-bogey on his opening hole on No. 10 and adding two bogeys on 13 and 14. He made par on his next four holes, but bogeyed three more after making the turn. Hoag chipped away at his score with a birdie on the eighth hole for a round of 6-over 77.
Fellow junior Brad Smith notched a 3-over 74 to finish a 35th-place tie at 225. After a double-bogey on No. 10 started his day off on the wrong foot, the Peru, Ind., product balanced the rest of his round with three birdies to four bogeys.
Matt Turner began day two on a high note, putting up two quick birdies and seven pars in his opening nine. The freshman from Dubai fell on hard times after the turn, however, posting a 5-over 76 for the day. He posted a 226 and ended in a tie for 38th with teammate Michael Cress. After opening day with a pair of 77s, the junior from Dublin, Ohio, came back strong on the final day by posting a steady round of 1-over 72.
Close behind Cress and Turner was freshman Zack Sobel who fired a 4-over 75 in the final round and ended on a solid note by making par on his last seven holes. The Clearwater, Fla., native tied for 44th with a 228.
Along with the starting five, Ohio State also had six golfers competing as individuals. Senior Brad Wright led all Buckeyes for the event, posting a score of 214 in his final Kepler Intercollegiate. The Cambridge, Ohio, native was consistent throughout the event, with rounds of 71-71-72 for a sixth-place finish. His final round included par on 13 holes with three bogeys to two birdies. Both his finish and 54-hole total were season-bests.
Also with his best performances of the season in both finish and 54-hole score was Alex Redfield. The sophomore from Columbus put up nine-straight pars during the final round on his way to a score of 3-over 74 and a sum of 218 to tie for 11th place.
Patrick Simard finished the final home event of his career with a 74 in the final round to match the pair of 74s he carded on day one. The senior from Marbella, Spain, closed out with a 222 for the tournament and tied for 21st place.
Sophomore Dan Charen finished in a 38th place after posting a 75 on the final day to close out at 226. Following two rounds of 73 on day one, redshirt freshman Jamie Sindelar had a tough final round with an 82 for a total of 228 to finish in a tie for 44th place.
After solid rounds of 73-74 day one, senior David Becher also struggled in the final round with an 82. The Dublin, Ohio, native carded a 229 for the tournament and finished in a tie for 48th place.
After competing in three tournaments in as many weeks, the Buckeyes will get next weekend off before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., to take part in the Boilermaker Invitational April 24-25. It is the final regular-season tournament for Ohio State before the Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis.
