COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Grainne O’Neill opened the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional for the Ohio State women’s tennis team in the singles qualifier Thursday morning at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Illinois. After advancing through two rounds of play, the Blessington, Ireland, product will contend for a spot in the main singles draw Friday vs. host Illinois’ Jerricka Boone.
In the first round of competition, O’Neill topped Detroit’s Anna Davydova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. The junior then secured her spot in the round of 16, defeating EMU’s Daphne Freiderichs, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
Tournament action will continue Friday with the conclusion of the singles qualifier at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the first two rounds of main draw doubles beginning at 3 p.m. ET.
The Buckeye sophomore tandem of Sandy Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis are the No. 2 seed in the doubles main draw, with the duo of O’Neill and freshman Anna Sanford seeded seventh. Both duos have a bye into the second round, with O’Neill/Sanford set to play for the first time at 6:15 p.m. ET and De Santis/Niehaus scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. ET. The team of sophomores Ferny Angeles-Paz and Miho Kowase will play Wisconsin’s Burich and Grambeau in the first round at 5 p.m. ET in the first round.
