COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2005 Big Ten Championships posting an NCAA `B’ qualifying time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The championships, held in Bloomington, Ind., began Wednesday with two events.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team, composed of Nicole Maglich (Jr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota), Griet Buelens (Fr., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen), Kylie Lancken (Sr., Pymble, Australia/Ravenswood) and Gulsah Gunenc (So., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), touched the wall in 7:21.79. The women knocked 16 seconds off their previous season-best time, set at the Miami Invite on Dec. 5. The Buckeyes came in eighth of the 11 relay teams with Michigan hitting the wall first.

The first event was the 200-yard medley relay, in which the Buckeyes swam a time of 1:44.65. Stephanie Fennell (So., Cambellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (So., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund (Fr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev Gymnasium) and Maglich swam the Buckeyes to an 11th-place finish, with Penn State topping all competitors.

The Buckeyes will continue championship competition daily until Saturday evening.
