PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team opened its 2017 campaign with a 194.375-192.800 win over Pittsburgh Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet marks the third-consecutive season-opening win for the Buckeyes.
“I’m happy with the way the team performed tonight,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “We maintained composure after a few mistakes and finished strong on beam. This is going to be an exciting team to watch this season. We have good depth and will be adding in some difficulty in the coming weeks. I think this is a team that will gain momentum and never look back.”
In the second rotation, Ohio State moved to vault, where it won the event with a 48.725. Mattern tied her 2016 season-high 9.850 to win the event title while Jamie Stone tied for second at 9.825.
Ohio State then won floor exercise with a 48.500, paced by Mattern’s meet-best 9.850. Stone followed with a 9.800 for fourth place.
An event win on balance beam then concluded the meet, as the Buckeyes earned a 48.550. Stefanie Merkle won the event with a 9.850 while Hofland and Stone tied for third at 9.750.
Mattern tied her career-best 39.225 to take the all-around title.
The Buckeyes open their home slate in a quad-meet against Michigan, Washington and Kent State at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. John Arena.
