COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 28 Ohio State men’s tennis team shutout No. 71 Purdue, 7-0, Saturday at the Lafayette Sports Center in West Lafayette, Ind. With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers fell to 3-10 overall, 0-4 in the conference. Next up, the OSU squad prepares to take on No. 2 Illinois at 1 p.m. EST Sunday in Champaign., Ill.
Ohio State captured its sixth shutout of the season after the win at Purdue. The Buckeyes have shutout Butler (Jan. 28), Xavier (Jan. 28), Virginia Commonwealth (Feb. 25), Coastal Carolina (March 21) and Iowa (March 26) in 2005 dual action. While at OSU, head coach Ty Tucker has accumulated 45 shutouts. This mark includes 14 shutouts in 2004, 10 in 2003, seven in 2002, nine in 2001 and three in 2000.
In doubles action, Buckeyes Dennis Mertens (Jr., Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk) and Chris Klingemann (So., Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) were defeated, 8-5, by Purdue’s Eric Hodgman and David Robinson. The OSU tandem of sophomore Joey Atas (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Drew Eberly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) knocked off Colin Foster and Scott Warner, 8-6, at the No. 3 spot. Atas and Eberly are the only Buckeye doubles pair undefeated in Big Ten play this season.
With the doubles portion tied at 1-all, the point came down to a tie-break at the No. 1 position. The OSU duo of juniors Scott Green (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), ranked No. 1 in the ITA Division I poll, pulled through with a 9-8 victory over Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell. Ohio State swept through the singles portion as the Buckeyes won at all six spots. Freshman Buckeye Eberly clinched the match win for the squad after a 6-2, 6-2 performance on the No. 6 court. Eberly improved to 3-0 in singles action against Big Ten opponents.
In singles competition, the only trouble for the Buckeyes came on the No. 4 court. Junior Buckeye Green was able to pull off a 7-6, 6-7, 10-7 tie-break win over Purdue’s Jarred Leibner to secure Ohio State’s shutout.
