COLUMBUS, Ohio– Ohio State’s Dennis Mertens (Sr., Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk) and Ty Schuab (So., Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) advanced to the second qualifying round of the ITA Midwest Regionals in Ann Arbor, Mich., Thursday. Mertens won two more matches in qualifying to reach the main draw of the singles bracket, which begins Saturday. Matches are being played at the University of Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center.

In the opening round, Mertens (3-1) beat Patrick Thompson of Ball State, 6-3, 6-2. He also defeated his next opponent, Patrick Rose of Purdue 6-3, 6-4. Mertens advanced to the main draw by winning his third match of the day, downing Chris Clark of Toledo 6-3, 6-3.

Schuab (1-2) beat Jeremy Miller of Xavier, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in the opening round before losing his next match to Toledo’s Mohammed Al Nahani, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Devin Mullings (Jr., Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) is 1-1 during fall competition and sits atop the singles bracket main draw as the No.1 seed. He opens play against Jarrod Epkey of Ball State Saturday. Mullings is joined by fellow Buckeyes Bryan Koniecko (Fr., Long Island, N.Y./Syosset), the No. 13 seed, No. 24 seed Ross Wilson (Sr. Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) and Drew Eberly (So. Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). All three are 1-1 on the season.

Rounding out the Ohio State field are No. 9 seed Chris Klingemann (Jr., Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent), who is 4-1, and Scott Green (Sr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover), who is 1-1.
