COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nearly 30 former Ohio State men’s soccer players and coaches, including their families and friends, were reunited Sunday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for the annual Buckeye alumni game. The game featured Buckeyes from every decade of Ohio State soccer, back to the program’s inception in 1953, as well as the current Ohio State team, which took on alumni in the first of three 30 minute sessions.
Alumni are listed below, while the event also marked the return of several former coaches, including Dr. Walter Ersing (head coach 1958-68), Dr. Bill Servedio (head coach 1971-75) and Tom Bell (player and assistant coach, 1973-74).
“This year’s annual Alumni game was one of the best we’ve had since I’ve been here,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “It was great having former coaches Walt Ersing and Bill Servedio join us. We’re so very proud of our tradition that everyone who ever played or coached here at Ohio State has contributed to, and been a part of, to make it an outstanding college soccer program.”
In the first session, a competitive alumni side, led by former captains Tony Earp and David Ridenhour, took on the current Buckeyes, who ended last season ranked No. 16 in the nation. Freshman goalkeeper Casey Latchem saved two shots and the current Buckeyes won the session, 1-0, when junior Kevin Nugent tapped in the game-winner off an assist from freshman David Bauer.
The following sessions featured a mix of alumni players, including the return of several players from the early 1970s who played under Coaches Servedio and Bell, including Dr. Tom Walsh, Carl Smallwood, Gary Kubala, Phil Vonderbrink, Mike Graham and Klaus Lambeck.
Goals for the alumni were scored by Matt Schroeder (1994-97) in the second session on an assist from Pete Withers (2001-04) and Tony Earp (1998-02) and a late goal was added in the third session by Brooks Humphreys (1997-00) on an assist by Jim Waters (1982-83). David Ridenhour (1999-03) turned in the defensive play of the game, erasing a sure goal with a clearing header on a shot to the upper corner of the goal. The next OSU Soccer Alumni event will be the Connor Senn Memorial Golf Outing on June 11, 2005 at Royal American Links. Information about the outing can be accessed on the web site link.
