COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (3-5, 1-0 GWLL) downed Butler (4-4, 0-2 GWLL), 13-9, Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind., in its Great Western Lacrosse League opener. Buckeye senior Kyle Olson had a team-best four goals in the win to tie his career high, while junior Craig Nolan had two goals and an assist and senior Tom Randisi had two assists and a goal.
The Buckeyes got on the board first, as Josh Wittenberg (Jr., Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored with 6:36 remaining in the opening quarter. Josh Funk (Fr., Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) assisted on the goal, marking his first career point. The Bulldogs responded with a man-up goal 26 seconds later by Grant Albertson, but OSU’s Eric O’Brien scored six seconds after that to give OSU the lead for good. Olson (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored his first goal of the game at with 4:38 left on the clock. Albertson, who ended the game with a team-best four goals, scored his second of the game with 2:51 left in the first.
Ohio State opened the second quarter with three goals in the first 48 seconds. Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) set up by Gary Bining (Jr., Delta, British Columbia/Delta), scored a man-up goal at 14:50, followed by Olson at 14:42 and Nolan at 14:12. Justin Doran (Jr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) ended the Buckeye run with a goal at 11:51. The Bulldogs scored the last two goals of the quarter to send OSU into the lockerroom at halftime with a 7-4 lead.
OSU scored the only three goals of the third quarter, by Olson, Randisi and Nolan. Olson scored his fourth goal of the game 28 seconds into the final quarter. Butler scored at 12:12 and 11:35, followed by a Bryan Keane (So., Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) goal, set up by Andrew Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), with 10:26 on the clock. Butler scored three of the final four goals, with Jon DeCanio (So., Clifton, Va./Robinson) tallying for OSU, for the 13-9 final.
The Buckeyes had 33 shots in the game, while Butler had 40. Buckeye redshirt-freshman Mike Rimmer had 16 saves in all 60 minutes. For Butler, Ryan Kaiser played 15:48 and allowed six goals while making three saves, suffering the loss. Sam Ashley played the last 44:12, allowing seven goals and making seven saves.
Ohio State won 12-of-25 faceoffs in the game. Eric O’Brien (So., Powell, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) won 9-of-20 draws, while Jon Rydberg (r-Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) won 3-of-5 faceoffs.
The Buckeyes converted 2-of-4 man-up chances vs. Butler, while the Bulldogs were 1-for-10.
Bender, Randisi and Olson each extended their scoring streaks to six, while Wolff has at least one point in all eight games this season and is on a 14-game point streak dating back to last season.
Ohio State returns home to take on Robert Morris at 4 p.m. Friday at North Turf Field.
